At present, the Fund meets once a year to review
applications for grants, normally around the end of
May or early June. The Advisory Board reviews the
applications and makes recommendations to the Trustees
as to which grants they should approve and in what
amounts. The Trustees then vote to approve or make
adjustments to the Advisory Board’s recommendations,
although adjustments are very infrequent.
In the past several years, the annual grants have
ranged from around $35,000 to $55,000 with individual
grants ranging from $800 to $20,000. The majority
of grants amount to about $2,000 to $3,000. Rarely
does the Fund provide money to cover the entire production.
The Bascom Little Fund prefers not to make grants
to individuals. All applicants should be qualified
tax-exempt organizations to which donations are deductible
for federal tax purposes. Applicants should address
the following questions when applying for a grant:
Ed London's composers
corner |
- What is the purpose of the project? How will
it promote new music in the Northeast Ohio region?
- What are the professional qualifications and
current activities of the persons involved?
- What is the anticipated budget for the project?
Has a thorough, itemized budget been prepared
outlining performance expenses, recording, publishing,
copying costs, promotional costs, and ancillary
administrative costs?
- Is there a spokesman connected with the project
who is qualified to promote the project to the
musical community and to the general public? The
Trustees are particularly concerned that there
be adequate funds set aside to promote the project
to the general community so the concert or project
has a broader audience than friends and family
of the composer.
- Have the composers been properly protected
in the matter of copyrights and royalties? Musician
releases are recommended so the music so the music
may be played on the “Not the Dead White
Male Composer’s Hour.”
- At what date are the funds needed?
- Has provision been made to ensure that programs
of concerts or copies of recordings completed
be furnished to the Bascom Little Fund? We submit
these to the Western Reserve Historical Society
where they maintain a file of Bascom Little documents
and recordings.
